Five Indie RPGs That Actually Respect Your Commute
Mobile RPGs have a reputation for being endless treadmills designed to wear you down until you spend. But there's a quieter wave of indie role-playing games built for short bursts, and they're far more satisfying.
The trick these games share is a clean save-anywhere system and combat that resolves in a minute or two. You can open them, fight one encounter, make one decision, and close them again without feeling like you abandoned something mid-thought.
Hollow Lantern is my current favourite of the bunch. Its campfire save points double as story beats, so stopping never feels like an interruption. The pacing assumes you're playing in fragments, and it's designed around that reality instead of fighting it.
If you've been avoiding the genre on mobile because you don't have thirty free hours, these are the ones to try. Depth and brevity aren't opposites.
Start one on your next bus ride. You might be surprised how much story fits into a few short stops.
